Interview with trumpeter/flugelhorn player Ernie Hammes on JazzTimes.com
SANFRANCHA CD-Release Concert
SANFRANCHA LINER NOTES
About 20 years ago, I made my first steps in jazz after studying classical music the years before.
The first jazz-cd's I got were from the likes Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson and Claudio Roditi.
With the latter, I found my first teacher in jazz. Back then I went regularly to NewYork as a tourist, although always with my horn. So, one day I got Claudio's number, just called him up for a lesson, and guess what, an hour later I was sitting with Claudio Roditi in a rehearsal studio getting my first jazz lesson.
We would meet again many times after this either to play music together or to enjoy good food or a nice glass of wine.
Through Claudio, I got deeper into latin-jazz and in the early 90's, I put together my first band by the name of ERNESTO'S CUBOP…
Although I played so many different genres over the last years, I always wanted to go back to my first love in jazz-music, the latin-jazz! And what better to ask Claudio if he would join me on this journey, and he did!
I also invited many friends, I was fortunate to play and tour all over the world for the last years… thanks Amina, Claudio, Jean-Louis, Sven, Pierre-Alain, Eric, Chris, Johannes, Bart & Paul…helping make my dream come true!
Quotation:
Trumpeter Ernie Hammes is an exceptional artist! His in-depth knowledge of jazz, latin music, baroque and symphonic music, puts him in a very special category. We have known each other for a number of years, and I always see a continuous development and growth of his artistry.
I am very happy to have participated in this fiery new project of Ernie's and wish him a lot of success.
